New Spending???

“Going beyond the status quo, administration’s 2012 operating budget estimates include about $470,000 in new spending to address various strategic priorities previously approved by council.
“The budget contains a number of initiatives that align with our strategic initiatives of community pride, sustainable community growth, community wellness, community safety, and being a progressive civic administration,” City of Moose Jaw financial services department director Brian Acker said while presenting the budget estimates at Monday’s regular council meeting.”

Is now the time to be “going beyond the status quo” when our operating and capitol budgets are ballooning out of proportion all the while revenues are way up? Obviously the operation and management of the city is in disarray, one can easily see it by our deteriorating infrastructure and our ballooning budgets, but is this additional spending going to cure or even address the problem, I think not. At a time when city government should be finding ways to get leaner, more efficient and paying for what we already have they are doing the opposite!

They want the city to grow so as to increase revenue, well then simple, find ways to reduce taxes and they will beat a path to your door.

We are short 6.6 million in fundraising for the multiplex. That might be part of the new expense.

Strategic planning should not be a vehicle for City Hall (Manager) to waste more building a bureaucratic empire in an attempt to hide their incompetence!!! And with all this "New Spending" that has been proposed, just WHERE IS THE VALUE TO THE TAXPAYER!!! What a screwed up City Hall we have and it all starts with bad leadership!

Yet another year of increased spending exceeding inflation. I believe that's at least 6 years in a row now. Some Councillors think this is "progressive". Only a few seem to know is it the road to financial disaster.

i've learned that words don't always mean the same thing to everyone. humpty dumpty language you could say. when we think progressive we think about doing better. but i think when our politicos talk about 'a progressive civic administration' they are using the term in a way more consistent with its use in politics in the early 20th century, social, political, and economic reform, progressivism. maybe more like this guy says

http://www.goldparty.org/poliprogressive.html

What, then, does “progressive” mean to someone when, from a leftist perspective, we’re fast moving in reverse?
An interesting fact is that “liberals” today seem ashamed of that label. Few politicians identify themselves as liberal; “progressive” is the preferred term. For some reason, political liberalism has become associated with the idea of taxing and spending without limit.

ah, taxing and spending without limit. sounds familiar. that must be the 'progressive civic administration' they are talking about.

The ironic thing about all of this is that the larger than inflation tax increases also contributes to inflation (as measured by the consumer's price index) which next year allows certain members of council to justify an even higher tax increase.

The geographical distribution of the sample varies by product. The most geographically dispersed price samples are for goods and services whose prices are likely to be heavily influenced by local market conditions (e.g., locally determined prices such as rents, water charges, local transit fares, and property taxes). In contrast, prices, such as car registration fees or postage fees, are collected from provincial or national agencies.
