Traffic Lights and the Engineering Department

Postby arron » Fri Dec 23, 2011 10:09 am

Who down at the City Of Moose Jaw's Engineering Department is in charge of the INCREDIBLY ILLOGICAL PROGRAMMING OF THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN THIS THIRD WORLD ZONE?

Eg 1) Thatcher E and Superstore/Peavey Mart... One pulls up to lights from Peavey Mart and the lights change to allow north/south traffic to flow. Changes back and traffic proceeds east and west on Thatcher... Big problem - this light has ZERO DELAY: another vehicle can pull up from Superstore right after the light has cycled for Thatcher east/west travel and will change the light for north/south immediately. WHO IS THE "BRAIN" THAT PROGRAMMED THAT???
Another thought... WHO PUT THAT TRAFFIC LIGHT THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE? IT IS SUPER DETRIMENTAL TO TRAFFIC FLOW ON THATCHER.

Eg 2) High St W and 9th Ave NW (at north foot of 9th Ave Bridge)... HOW MUCH BRAIN POWER WAS EXPENDED PROGRAMING THIS ONE? NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC FLOWS NICELY; SOUTHBOUND, ANOTHER STORY. The amount of time for traffic to proceed south off the 9th Ave bridge is quite short... 25 seconds by my count... LEADS TO TRAFFIC PILING UP ON THE BRIDGE DURING "RUSH HOUR"... REALLY NAILED THAT ONE, DIDN'T THEY.

Many more that can go in here...

I am hoping the City can do a study on this and get this corrected. Maybe we could use the same group that did the study for the traffic flow for the Downtown Multiplex!

What spend $60,000 on a three year study and then remove the lights and put in a four way stop and call it progress.

No, I do not love the caps lock button. I do not love anything inanimate... how could that possibly be?

UNLESS you think like a lot of people, that money is far more important than, say, people.

You are very right. I do have the directions reversed in my post. Thanks for catching that jty!

a) The City has had an awfully hard time, over the past number of years keeping people working for its engineering department because of extremely low salaries offered.

b) Because resources are relatively scarce at City Hall for engineering staff, most of the hiring is concentrated in the civil engineering function, which is logical for the City.

c) The work of taking care of traffic lights essentially falls onto one relatively low-paid tech. Who, if they can even keep the position filled, is paid so little that there is no reason to 'go the extra mile'. Especially for a City that has staffed itself, in some cases, with incompetent (some might even say corrupt) ex-NDP rejects.

d) The budget for equipment has been minimal. In many cases, its a matter of 'putting out fires' with the limited resources that are available, rather than getting new technology in place. For instance, just look at the traffic light fixtures; while most cities have moved to LED setups to save $$$ on bulb maintenance/repair/electricity costs, Moose Jaw is still stuck in the past.

For sure, a lot of the traffic lights need painting. They are embarrassing to look at when you are driving visitors around.
