Recycled campaign signs?

Postby cavon76 » Tue Oct 27, 2009 3:50 pm

I was just in the Jaw yesterday, for the first time since the campaign had begun. Noticing most signs are professionally done with the exception of at least one...Don Mitchell.

I'm sure this man is not so cheap as to actually use a 'recycled' NDP campaign sign (did he ever run for NDP? I thought he did), but I noticed that the few signs I did see of his look like just that. Recycled NDP campaign signs, with "Vote NDP" portion ripped off the top.

Anyone else notice this? What's your thoughts? I am all for recycling and the environment....but come on! :?

Interesting observation.

In my experience people don't tend to spend big money unless there is big money to be made - hence all the advertising during the multiplex referendum. Many said there was money to be lost on a no vote.

If Don is indeed recycling NDP signs it says to me that the guy doesn't have big money at stake and really, nothing to lose. That's encouraging after all we've seen this year. I'm sure if some of the other fiscally responsible candidates had old signs laying around they'd probably use them too.
Irresponsible news writers present only 1 side of a story.
The real Multiplex business plan is to suckle mama's teet until it runs dry, or she learns that the child is really 72 years old and needs to be booted out on their own.

Refreshing to see a little "frugality" in today's disposable society! Might be an indicator that he'd have the same respect for taxpayer dollars!

I'm not sure I understand your objection cavon, are you saying recycling is only valid if it's aesthetically pleasing?

Noticed this a few weeks ago.

It's the signs he used in the 2008 federal election campaign with the "NDP" sliced off.

Well, maybe he's being environmentally conservative. I don't think it reflects upon him and how he'd use our tax dollars.. my thinking would be, "if I can re-use it, why not?" (for some things, of course.. not all). His signs certainly add a different flair to the rest of the plain jane square ones.

Well, I'm just thinking it looks a little tacky to have all these campaign signs out there for candidates, some of which have never even seen an election before, that are professionally done and yes, asthetically pleasing.

Not saying one shouldn't recycle old campaign posters if they are for the same kind of campaign, or still in decent shape. But...literally ripping signs in half to (what I see as) save a few bucks?? How much does a batch of campaign signs cost anyways?

To me, it shows a lack of caring about the campaign. If they are (in my eyes) too lazy or too cheap to get a nice shiny, new batch of signs...what else are they too lazy or too cheap to do, not only in their campaign, but if they get elected? Yes, frugality is a benefit for councillors, but it can also be a major hinderance. Are his flyers the same NDP ones he handed out, with the NDP just whited out?

I don't see Mr. Hagel or Ms. Shasko reusing their campaign signs from the provincial/federal campaigns. Just my view on this.

It's interesting that you see this as only about financial resources. Not as an attempt to reduce what goes into the landfill. Seems to me to be exactly what someone running on an environmental platform should be doing. Rather than voting to buy new garbage trucks that reduce monitoring of hazardous materials entering the landfill.

Perspective I guess. Someone from outside Moose Jaw, destined to move his business here because we have a new multiplex, might see one of those recycled signs and change his mind.
