Proportional Representation

Proportional Representation

Postby Priapus » Thu Apr 28, 2011 11:15 pm

I keep hearing the Green party pushing for proportional representation. as far as im concerned, this is basically an acknowledgement that they are a fringe party, because proportional representation is designed to allow the fringes to backdoor their way into parliament.

I came across this a couple of weeks ago, its called alternative vote, and sounds like a much more interesting idea to me.

The NDP has been advocating porportional representation for years... if the Cons get 37% of the vote.. that is how many seats they get in the HoC.. it would limit the number of seats that the Bloc would receive... its not a perfect system, but IMO, its better than the one we currently use.

It also robs individual ridings of their right to chose their own reps, as the proportional appointees will have to be slotted in somewhere. plus it entrenches the party system completely, as an independant who wins his own riding with a landslide would not have proportional status, and would wind up replaced by an appointee. and yes, the NDP in the past have supported proportional representation... when they were what??? a fringe party.

I wonder if they become the official opposition if the NDP will want proportional representation or just take their seats????

I believe that the NDP still supports PR... the Conservatives would never get a majority based on it... even if they garner 40% of the vote, that means they get 40% of the 308 seats, which would give them 123... but 40% could give the Cons a majority in the current first-past-the-post system that is being currently used...

Alternative voting is NOT the same as proportinal representation.. you obviously need to read up on what PR is and what the NDP policy is...

The NDP policy is that a party should receive seats in the HoC proportional to the percentage of votes they receive... they system in your first post is totally different to PR... someone needs to get 50% to win, so if say in our riding, Boughen gets 36% on based on first choice, then Evanchuk recieves 34%, and Collicott gets 25% then the last place finisher Shasko gets 5%.. then Shasko is taken of the ballot... then in a third count, Collicott get taken off... that is not PR... it called Alternative voting, or AV... you should really have paid attention to what that video was...

FYI: Here is what the PR sytem is about:

I do believe the NDP supports the closed party list of PR...

I will not comment on AV but what I will comment on is proportional voting.
In Israel, this proportional voting has led to a situation where they are continually forced to have coaltion governments. Big thing there is, is that there are some very extremist religious parties that are part of the coalitions that have been formed and it has led to a continuation of the violence, distrust and animosity as the fringe parties policies suddenly become the goivernment's policies.
