Glenn Hagel's convention center

Postby Placid » Thu Oct 15, 2009 5:24 pm

Did anyone watch CTV at noon with Glenn Hagel?

Did you happen to notice that Glenn mentioned about twice the "multiplex and convention center?" He also mentioned about bringing national conventions and boosting tourism because of the convention center, something we haven't been able to in the past.

My understanding is that the convention center was removed from this project. Mr. Hauta said that this won't be a convention center "per se" because we don't have the requirements in the building to make it a true convention center.

What's the deal, multiplex and convention center or hockey and curling rink?

I think they meant it won't have the large rooms where you would normally have seminars or smaller shows. It will only be used as one big show area, just like Saskplace or Evraz Place when they have the car shows and home shows. In the initial plans there were several smaller rooms out the sides, kind of like the banquet rooms at the Heritage.

Whenever Hagel refers to the Multiplex he calls it the "downtown convention centre." That's his clever way of deflecting the negativity the term "Multiplex" has acquired over the last several years. I'd say its worked for him so far.

He got over $8,000,000.00 for his "downtown convention center" (Multi-mess) and nothing for a very high priority item like the Hospital! Hell could freeze over before this NDP retread would ever get my vote! Not much choice for Mayor!

Just returned from the candidates forum where it was being referred to as a 1000 seat convention centre.

Maybe I'm out of touch here. Does anyone know if this thing will have a separate room for 1000 seat conventions? If so does that mean the floor won't be used? Ya speede5 I remember this was supposed to be a facility for big conventions with smaller rooms. Too bad everything was scaled back on this project but yet the price kept growing.

1000 seats? Maybe if you take out the ice on the curling side. Or maybe he's talking about the capacity on the main ice surface for conventions. http://www.moosejaw.ca/multiplex/multip ... lans.shtml

I think if the current Council had followed Administration's recommendation to table the report of the steering committee, hold a session for the public to allow public input, then this type of question wouldn't be coming forward right now.

Despite some candidates abhorrent comments that "the multiplex is a done deal - get over it", the issue still remains that the people paying for it have no idea what it will be like when done, and the politicians themselves only confuse the matter by offering conflicting "facts."
Irresponsible news writers present only 1 side of a story.
The real Multiplex business plan is to suckle mama's teet until it runs dry, or she learns that the child is really 72 years old and needs to be booted out on their own.

That's a lot of the problem. It seems that this thing is being pieced together on the fly and the plans are all "as-builts". Oh we'll let you know when we're ready if the attitude I feel.

I'll get over it when I'm watching Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Kurt Cobain play a sold out show.
