Larissa's view on the Multiplex

Postby Al » Fri Oct 23, 2009 10:26 am

Someone pointed out the Discovermoosejaw.com article on the multiplex and Larissa's response I feel was mature beyond her years, a surprise indeed.

http://www.discovermoosejaw.com/index.p ... Itemid=401

"In a time of economic recession where people are losing their jobs every day and are still in need of social programs will Moose Jaw's Multiplex still take priority to other levels of government? With so many people in Moose Jaw laid off in the past three years should it still take priority to ours? Can these people afford increased taxes, increased ticket prices, increased hockey fees and potential school closures?"

Quite intelligent compared to the other cookie cutter responses. Definitely sets herself apart as intelligent and informed. Has her priorities straight.

The only other responses on there that seemed even close were Margaret Moran, Scott Maslasz and Don Mitchell. If I hear "move forward" or "let's just move on" one more time I'm going to scream!

The real Multiplex business plan is to suckle mama's teet until it runs dry, or she learns that the child is really 72 years old and needs to be booted out on their own.

Hi Al Larrisa has my vote. I read through her stuff (although I am not a Green)She appears to be be well informed and very organized. In my opinion she has all the attributes needed to become an excellent councilor. Again she is definetly on my slate and I have been encouraging everybody I talk with to vote for her.

My question to Larissa is would she support putting the Multiplex project 'on-hold', so that it can be properly engineered for energy efficiency and sustainability?

We had a brief debate over whether the ice plant from the Civic Centre should be re-used. I said, "no", because it is based on technology that would vent the heat to the atmosphere, instead of using the heat for the purposes of heating other civic buildings, or alternatively, rejecting the heat to a geothermal reservoir.

Obviously, since the Multiplex wasn't properly engineered in the first place for energy efficiency, it is going to have monsterous energy bills and a huge carbon footprint that is entirely unnecessary.

BTW, she has my vote, but I hope she pushes the issue that the Multiplex is far from being state-of-the-art in terms of its environmental impact, and that, it is, at best, a suboptimal solution to the city's needs.

I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt as well. One of the few candidates who have shown some common sense instead of just repeating the standard line about moving forward, growing the population and decorum.

And I'm not really into "green", but I know green usually means efficient, which usually means cost savings, which usually means less waste, all good things. And we know that building is being glossed over just to get it done. We all know it is going to be less than adequate, but it will take another 2-3 years for the voting public to find out that it will wind up like every other project in this town that they think is a poor example of how to do things. The first time they hear we can't hold a soccer tournament because we don't have enough fields, or we can't hold a certain conference because we don't have the in wall media wiring, or we can't have the Tournament of Hearts because we were dreaming in Technicolor, then I think everyone else will figure it out too.

Until then I'm happy to know others have been following closely enough to know we need a redesign and some serious thought and planning. Personally, I can't believe the downtown Environmental impact has been done properly. That's a good place to start.

I am not a Green either - hey I work in the oil industry.
But I do know that in such a facility as the Multiplex we should have been looking at incorporating some greener technologies.
As a downtown location we could have at least looked at something to hopefully reduce costs. Maybe it would cost a little bit more now but what about the long-term effects.
It is obvious that this council had to get the Multi-plex into the ground before the election. With all of the animosity in town could they really take a chance that all of a sudden a slate of anti-Multi-plex candidates got elected??? With that rush there has got to be mistakes.
On the green side I am wondering if we could not incorporate some of their technologies that in the long run are going to save us a lot of money.
It is like the indoor pool. You go out and build it quickly - after much public controversy due to location and costs - and then years later you are advertising that you received a massive grant to upgrade the facility to offset energy costs. Couldn't this have been done sooner and for a lot cheaper???
Yes it was grants from senior level(s) of government, but in the end we all pay taxes - for the most part - to all levels of government. Somebody, someday is going to have to pay the bill.
On a city level it is going to hit a lot quicker because we cannot finance based upon area resources like the province can nor can we mortgage the resources of the entire country like the federal government is able to - eventually we are all going to have to pay the price.
If it hits the city sooner and the increase is massive due to fiscal imprudence the only solution to escape the ultimate time to pay up is to move.
In the end with some foresight and incorporating good design and plannng we could help eliminate or lessen the ultimate financial crunch I see over top of our heads like an atom bomb waiting to explode.

The next council should not buy more land for parking, they should allow the plan to go forth as it was pushed through. Then the Fab 5 could get the credit they so richly deserve.
We all know their ass is going to be saved by future councillors & all their stupid choices will be overlooked. That's really too bad. I for one would really like to see the Multimess open up & be exactly as these goofballs designed it. Then the lemmings would cry like babies.

I think there should be a huge sign at the entry to the 72 stall parking lot that clearly states the five people responsible for the stupidity .

THE city of moose jaw wishes to thank the former Mayor McBain, Councilors Shwingy/RSH/Findley & Chow for their foresight in planning parking for the Multimess. Please enjoy your walk & feel free to park anywhere in a ten block radius. Fees may apply, Bus service is available from various locations during most working hours.
