Big thing I have learnt about politics Sledge is that sadly most voters do have a very short memory.

The other thing I should have added about this is that the MOB had about $400,000 left over in their budget from last year's money - that they do not have to give back to the city - so in reality they are saying it is going to cost a little over $1.3 million this year to subsidize the Multi-Plex this is NOT as much of a decrease as we are led to believe.....

Except they aren't even carrying that $400,000 forward into the new budget year. They planned ahead, and last year passed a motion allowing them to bank that money. Think someone might have been anticipating the excess to even think of such a motion? If i remember correctly, it was Terry Coleman that introduced that motion.

What I am inclined to think is that they have created their own reserve or slush fund if you like into the several hundreds of thousands of dollars that they and not council controls.
Do you think that they might use this money in an attempt to bid for some of these wonderful events they envision and not use itr for the actual operations of the Multi-Plex or as an emergency reserve???

This is quite troubling because as I understand the Multi-Plex operations they are independent of council and they can basically do with a very large sum of money as they please and not have to worry about any type of oversight nor any public input into the spending of that money. Would I be correct in stating that Priapus???

What I heard Monday night was someone saying they would be able to save it to use against a year in which they had an operating deficit. It kind of sounded like an operating safety net, which i am sure everybody would love to have, but such a reserve would certainly reduce the need for fiscal prudence and allow a great deal more risk to be taken with taxpayer dollars. Of course, Council could simply cut their request by that amount, forcing them to either use the funds for this years operations or cut their anticipated costs, but with 3 members of their board on council, i don't see that happening.

Good statement, but why limit fiscal responsibility solely to Mosaic Place; why not hold all recreation and sports facilities in Moose Jaw to the same standard? Instead of “Mosaic should be self sufficient right now, this day, December 20, 2011,” how about: “The Moose Jaw Public Library, Wakamow Valley Park, the Phyllis Dewar Pool, the Kinsmen Pool, the Wally Boschuk Arena, the Bert Hunt Arena, the Park Hill park, Gutheridge Field, Optimist Park, Crescent Park, Bell Park, Ross Wells Park, Memorial Field, McCollough Field, the 13th Ave NW Park, Veterans’ Peace Park, Sunningdale Field, Hamilton Flats, Elks Athletic Field, Smith Field, the NE Reservoir Diamonds, the Canada Summer Games Soccer Park, the City walking and biking trails, and Mosaic Place/Field House should be self sufficient right now, this day, December 20, 2011?” None of them are necessities so why should taxpayers who do not use them be forced to subsidize them? Let’s eliminate the ones that cannot be self-sufficient and put the funds saved into necessities that should be funded at the municipal level, namely, streets, sidewalks, water supply, sewer, police services and fire services (which many Forum posters seem to believe can be replaced by a volunteer service). After all, Pottersville looked like it was a lot more fun than Bedford Falls in the classic Christmas movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life” and I am pretty sure that Henry F. Potter (the Lionel Barrymore character) would not have wasted taxpayer’s money on anything that could not turn a profit or, at least, break even.

Not quite the same.. a little sophistry goes a long way, eh?

AGAIN;
With all the revenue streams MOSAIC has right now, IT SHOULD ABSOLUTELY BE SELF SUFFICIENT.

Perhaps the MOB should Implement the LEAN model at MOSAIC. Then money would not be an issue and MOSAIC could quit sucking mommy's teat and fly the nest.

So not only are they taking taxpayer dollars-they're banking them!Who the heck is in charge in this city? Maybe it's time for an "Occupy city hall" movement!

They like to brag about not needing as much this year - typical of this Blue Sky lot - but they also have a bundle of our money from last year, so in reality they will really have $1.3 million of our money to use in 2012!! And what happens in 2013 and on? This is total garbage! That money they have left over should go back to City Hall/the taxpayer and they MOB can start all over with their budget funding request! The Fab-5 were bad on council, but these four fiscal fools that voted this in really need to go!

They seem quite proud of the fact that they have lowered their request by 20% from last year...I believe it should be one heck of a low lower. And..165 events have taken place in the multimess...guess that includes the warriors games as all I can recall is their grand opening, curling, hockey something or other and the figure skating. And the grand opening was a freebie for the public. Long way from 165 events if they discount the warrior's games.
I hate it when they gloss over the truth, when they make it out to be what it simply isn't. This is what angers me the most...but then again, guess Clarke doesn't want to lose his high paying job.

And yes they are banking them in a way that they are for the most part hidden dollars that the voters have no say and control over.
From what I am reading is that these were taxpayer dollars now they belong to another group.

how many of these 165 events could not have happened at hillcrest and civic centre? geez, even the stars on ice were there in 1989. then you get the idiots on this board bragging like them coming back to the multiplex were something new. i bet if santa came there they would assume it was because of the new rink.

by the way, facilities operators just emptied the trash. better add that to the count of events.

165 different events in 110 days

They must have kept alot of these events secret.

Even if they counted the Warriors games as events, there is no way there were 165 events.

Would love to see the list of events.
