Multiplex Budget

"we have no issue presenting what you want, but you've got to tell us what you want upfront." Kurt Saladana, chair of MOB.

This was the comment from Kurt Saladana, Chair of the MOB, after receiving a dressing down from certain Councillors for bringing in a budget request full of hype, but very short on information. But why wouldn't Saladana know what was expected? He was there to see the process last year. He saw what every other group brought to the table for information. He saw what they brought again this year. It was really no different than any nonprofit group takes to their funders. So why would he think any less was expected of the MOB? Why would this board even need to be told. This is a unique board for the city. the members of the board were carefully chosen after a lengthy screening process. They were supposed to have been assessed based on their competency. What possible competencies were being looked for if experience in operating a nonprofit organization wasn't one of them? What competencies might have been sought other than experience in budgetting for nonprofit groups? Was it perhaps the most competent at being controlled by special interest groups? was it a competency at portraying an attitude of arrogance and smugness?

just how could a competency based board bring forward such a pathetic attempt at a budget request and still profess to have both competence and dignity. They should simply be ashamed.

You` re exactly right, they brought forth nothing but a piece of blue sky propaganda. The same kind of crap this community has been fed since the beginning of this multimess. This is budget deliberations for crying out loud, not some car sale. Get with the program and supply the real income versus expenses for 2011 along with projected ones for 2012 nothing more, nothing less or get out of the way and leave someone who is capable of it.
Like I said on a previous post, those three councilors overseeing this board should resign, not only from the board but council as well, for they should know better. And the administrator who was hired to oversee this multiplex should be put on notice that anything less than total transparency to the taxpayers of the community of this third party board’s operations will not be tolerated.
Where is our mayor in all of this, he`s the one who should be making these kind of demands!

A really sad state of affairs for the taxpayer, but not "surprisingly unexpected" for Moose Jaw, from this Council, or from the spin doctors on/associated with the MOB!!

jty, where is the mayor in all this? He is doing what he does so well, making it "crystal clear" that there is transparancy from the board as he so likes to say. He is the biggest joke in Canada, I used to call him Fozzie, bt that is an insult to Fozzie Bear's intelligence. He and the 3 clown councillors Eby, Coleman and dumb old Tolmie should be run out of town, we know their pockets are bulging. When have you ever see an Honest Used Car saleman? Tolmie takes the cake!!! Coleman has been fired from more jobs than most people are even employed at in a lifetime. Then of couse our Mayor, the scandle with the NDP that got swept under the carpet. Moose Jaw, Surprisingly EXPECTED!!!!!

Looks like the number this mob is trying to hide from us taxpayers is bigger then first anticipated!! Instead of $400,000 it is more like $600,000!!

so, based on these numbers, it looks to me like the MOB is anticipated to bank $622,710 at the end of 2011.

If the MOB is required to apply those funds to their 2012 operating budget, it would reduce their request from $976,267 to $353,557.

That would reduce the city's operating deficit from $749,642 to $126,932.

This would reduce the necessary tax increase from 3.92% to 0.664%

(assuming my math is right LOL)

The sad thing is, I would consider these numbers from 2011 great news.... if the MOB wasn't trying to stockpile city money in their own private slush fund, putting it beyond city control or accountability.

I see nothing wrong with your math.

Where I see a problem is the $779,301.00 in administration salaries to administer this 2.9 million multimess operating budget. That is 26% of the entire budget! That is just totally ludicrous. Bring that down to a more realistic value of $75,000 to $125,000 (more than generous for a budget this size) and we end up with a surplus not a deficit.

I could see paying this kind of money if this facility was turning a profit and that money was a percentage of the profit, but it is not, it is running a deficit.

Totally agree!!!

Also agree with Jty that salaries are totally ridiculous. Normally employees have to prove themselves BEFORE demanding substantial renumeration as reward for their 'exceptional' efforts.
