Just after I started this thread the official opposition complained about the third party groups selected to nominate - well OK basically award - people for this award. The majority of third party groups selected to do so are Tory friendly or conservative groups.
Although I have not seen the final list I think we know what is going to happen here.
Sure there are going to be some good people to receive these awards but there are some - like the NDP MP that represents Vegas in the House and others - that really haven't done anything other than get elected on someone else's reputation.
Personally I believe that all politicians should not be allowed to receive this award. Or failing that they should have to be nominated for it by just regular folk.

I would say that there are about 410 of the 413 polticians who don't deserve this award.... including the so-called "Vegas" MP you speak of  ... ignore the fact that she had planned that vacation even before she was even nominated to be a candidate... and she herself admitted she never thought she would win... which should tell you something about voters... especially in Quebec. If she lost it would have never been an issue... but you are correct, she doesn't deserve it...

Thank you, but was she in Vegas for the entire campaign?
Personally I think the cost is too high. I think about half of the entire celebration money is being spent on these awards.
There are lots of Ordinary Joes and JoAnnes out there that do a lot of good and they will never be nominated let alone awarded this medal simply because they volunteer and help out in the trenches and never go out for the glory.
I know someone who is going to be nominating an executive director of an NGO because for her hard work. Thing is before she was a paid staff she was never around, when she quit for three years to work elsewhere you never saw her around and now that she has come back as the director - the other NGO lost their funding - she gets nominated.
Leaves me shaking my head...

Oh, c'mon TD... how many people do you know spend a whole month in Vegas? She was there for maybe a week at most... how many filler candidates did the NDP have in Quebec... because they don't usually gain ANY seats there... and will probably lose most of them in the next election... Quebecers voted for Layton, not the local candidate.

As for the medals, there will be A LOT of people who don't deserve them that will be awarded one... so it they will mean absolutely nothing to those who actually get one.

That's the whole point. She wasn't in Vegas for a month but seems to have only showed up in town after she was elected. For that she will be receiving a medal.
Hers and certain other people receiving these medals really cheapen its value for many.

It cheapens it for you because you can't get past the fact that this particular MP is going to get the medal... instead of blaming her, why not blame the people of her constituency that voted for her(and remember they were actually voting for Jack)... do you think any current council members deserve one? How about the mayor? If you really have a problem with this maybe the better thing is to direct your frustration to the GG himself... if enough Canadians do that, then maybe the criteria will be changed... just venting about here does absolutely nothing but make you appear to be a whiner, and you are better than that, TD.

I don't think any federal or provincial politician should be receiving these awards simply because they were elected. I think that what we pay them by way of salary and pension is thanks enough.
I personally would not mind the criteria to be ammended to disallow anyone receiving one if they receive a salary for what they do if that is what the award was based upon.
I think that you will find there are a lot of unsung people out there that never receive any recognition for what they do to help out the community. My own personal opinion is that there are many deserving people that do things to make life better in this country that only ask for a thank you in return and this award fits them. Chances are if you offered them one of these medals they would politely turn them down.
Are there any current council members that deserve this award? Not in my opinion.
In my opinion the mayor is a professional politician and doesn't deserve this award. Hagel has his good days and his bad days as a mayor.
You make a good point when it comes to sexual offenders receiving this award, what saddens me is that you have groups that are assisting in nominating people for this medal that are none too clean when it comes to that issue.
Right now I see that the opposition in Parliament have raised the issue and unfortunately they will have no impact in the awarding of these medals.
Some very deserving people are going to be receiving these medals but sadly there are others that will receive them through dubious means.
