Local lad Ray Boughen is set to receive the special Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal.
The medals are being presented to 60,000 Canadians for unselfish and dedicated service to making life better in the country.
As part of the program all Members of Parliament as well as Senators will automatically be receiving the medal.
I have looked at a list of some of the recipients and there are some very deserving people receiving the award.
In the case of our elected and well other not so elected politicians receiving this award I feel it really cheapens the value of the award. People can say look at what Ray has done for the community but we need to remember that in his class of medal recipients we will also be seeing an NDP MP from Quebec that was in Vegas during the last election and was not even in her constituency, a 19 year old MP from Quebec with no volunteer experience as well as countless political operatives appointed to the good life of the Senate.

Can someone tell me exactly what Ray has done as an MP to receive this award?

He sent me a few Christmas cards.
He never faced a local nomination meeting and finally he attended more than a few Warrior games.

Oh well then..for sure he deserves this award then! By all means....give him two...

Yes, by all means give him 2. He has done so much for this city!

Yes, you could give him two, one for each face. But I'm sure he'd prefer one, the best one in the world, paid for by taxpayers.

Of course he'll probably tell you that the granting of the award means that he will become the tourism capital of the world...

As part of the program all Members of Parliament as well as Senators will automatically be receiving the medal.

All MP's and Senators are getting so that means that there are 413 people who are undeserving of getting one, following the logic in this thread... they are just getting one by default... because they are serving their country by either being elected or appointed to Parliament.

I'm not saying that I favour them getting the medal, but I would guess its the same in Britain and politicians throughout the Commonwealth will be receiving them in the exact same fashion.

What "colossal" slap in the face for those view people who get the medal and are really deserving of recognition!!
What a load of poo-poo, just become a politician and you can have everything, including a comfortable retirement!!

They say it will go to "deserving" people... I'm sure there will be other undeserving people who will receive one of these medals... not just politicians. How many priests with dark secrets will get one? Just another example of how some will complain about anything...

Just after I started this thread the official opposition complained about the third party groups selected to nominate - well OK basically award - people for this award. The majority of third party groups selected to do so are Tory friendly or conservative groups.
Although I have not seen the final list I think we know what is going to happen here.
Sure there are going to be some good people to receive these awards but there are some - like the NDP MP that represents Vegas in the House and others - that really haven't done anything other than get elected on someone else's reputation.
Personally I believe that all politicians should not be allowed to receive this award. Or failing that they should have to be nominated for it by just regular folk.
