When the Oct. 24 civic election rolls around, councillor candidate Kristian Sjoberg will be just 35 years old. However, the fourth-generation Moose Javian told the Times-Herald his youth is an asset, and it is time for a new perspective from a demographic currently not part of local municipal politics.

“There seems to be a lack of representation in that age category,” he said, adding there are major issues he hopes to address if elected to the next city council.

For example, during his four-year term Sjoberg said he would address a multi-decades old neglect towards replacement of outdated water and sewer infrastructure throughout Moose Jaw. He said some of the pipes are years past their life expectancy and the city is too slow to address the issue.

“It’s kind of a hidden time bomb.”

Sjoberg said the city has spent a lot of money on items the community “wants,” such as Mosaic Place and the field house, and now he believes it is time to invest in the city’s core “needs.” Sjoberg said ensuring clean drinking water is absolutely a vital concern for the City of Moose Jaw.

Currently employed with SaskTel, Sjoberg spent six years in Calgary where, among other things, he studied ecotourism at Mount Royal College.

“I didn’t like the big city. It was just too much.”

When Sjoberg returned to the Friendly City eight years ago, he brought with him his deep passion for the environment — a concern he has carried with him into his community involvements. Sjoberg is a member of both the municipal advisory committee on the environment, as well as the parks and recreation advisory committee.

Not so Doc...do you recall reading a story in the TH about a woman Sandy Marshall? She was quite ill, and the doctor's couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. Finally, one doctor recognized the symptoms of lead poisoning...where did this come from? Water...pipes...
Clean, healthy water should be a priority in this city.

I agree with what he says about the multiplex and infrastructure.

Where does he think the money for infrastructure will come from, raise taxes again ?

He also does not seem to realize that the multiplex is not making money and has yet to be paid for, not to mention the loan for the failed pledge drive. This problem is not going to just go away.

I think he, as everyone else is banking on a bailout from the provincial and federal governments for fixing our ailing infrastructure.

Why does everything have to be about the Multiplex with you. Seems like you are the only one discussing it. Time to get over it already. It's built. The acts are coming in. It has made so much money it has paid for itself 10 times over. Well, ok not that last one.

But it's time to move forward and start fixing the infrastructure.
Congratulations Moose Jaw! You're ENTITLED to your new Council.

Good ideas, and if elected, I hope he follows through!

One can hope, but it's like Catsrain said...where does he expect the money to come from? The multiplex profits? Oh wait..is there actually profit? One never knows as one keeps getting different numbers constantly.

There is no profit. If there were they would not need an operating budget from the city. So not only does this elphant not pay back for the capital expense incurred, it does not begin to break even as far as daily operating expenses.
