Yes, you could argue for a renovation, but either way the arena as it stood was no longer suitable for the current and future useage.
And, does anyone really believe the Civic Centre was "beloved" by the way we saw her treated in the media prior to the plebiscite?
Absolutely. Pointing out the shortcomings due to modern standards and requirements does not mean the building was not loved. It was/is a great place to watch a game, with an atmosphere that will be hard to duplicate. Does that mean it should have lived on?
I guess it's kind of like an old car. I love the muscle cars of the 60's and 70's. Can't beat the sound or the rush of driving one. That said, your not as safe in an accident, they handle terribly, and, in some experts opinions, are harder on the enviornment. Sure you can drive it to work or to the beach, but if you want to run it as a cab or use it in a rental fleet your out of luck. Modern technology has made that car into a collectible with limited use. Heck, you can't even take your young children for a ride cause a car seat won't strap in properly.
BTW, I am by no means justifying the contest ap. The spirit of that contest is for the smaller communities to improve their meager facilities, not cities building brand new rinks.
