Although One Standard Does make some good points you still need to remember that for a lot of these groups there was and still is a very thin line between peaceful protests and actively seeking recruits or funding endevours that are not part of Canadian values and goals.
Lets face it, people have collected monies from their expatriat community here in Canada as well as other Canadians to fund things that we as a country maybe should not be supporting.
Many of these ex-patriat groups use their concentrated voting muscle to shape our foreign policy in ways that may not be for the best of Canada. We have to be careful we are not just helping one extremist group find a voice and funding source against what we as Canadians might see as extremists on the other side.
The big question is; who is right and who is wrong? And how do you make that determination?
The influence of the ethnic vote is going to continue to grow and expand as Canada brings in more and more immigrants and refugees and there is little you can say or do to stop it.
We can look at the events in Egypt and say hey look these people got freedom, but that may not be necessarily true. Will we see true democracy or yet another despot or a move to a more extremist government there? The jury is still out on that one.
You have to be very careful on this as it is a double-edged sword.
